Stars and Northern Lights
Jasper has the second largest Dark Sky Preserve in the world, and the town welcomes stargazers year-round but in particular to its annual Dark Sky Festival in October.
The festival itself takes place for 2 weeks at the end of October and we recommend you spend 5-6 nights in Jasper, taking in the sights and sounds of this amazing event, exploring the Dark Sky Preserve, and hopefully getting to view the Northern Lights. Experience awe-inspiring activities, and a shared passion for the wonders of the night sky. With special programming and events throughout the festival you are sure to create lasting memories under the stars.
Talk to us about combining this with an autumn trip on the Rocky Mountaineer, a fly-drive holiday taking in Kananaskis, Banff and Lake Louise, or even a longer city stay in Edmonton or Calgary.
This itinerary is flexible and can be tailor-made to suit you; if you want to add extra days in one area, extend the holiday or maybe change the direction of travel. Talk to one of our experts about how to make this holiday the perfect one for you.

More About This Expert“Looking up at Jasper’s impossibly vast sky is an awesome experience. The Dark Sky Festival draws stargazers from all over, but standing beneath the sky as the stars reveal themselves in stunning clarity can feel deeply personal—just you and the universe. A reminder of how small we are, yet how lucky we are to witness the beauty of the cosmos.”
