Farewell Harbour Lodge | Grizzly Bears, British Columbia

Located in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest at the mouth of Knight Inlet, on Berry Island, part of the island chain called the Broughton Archipelago, is Farewell Harbour Lodge.

Renowned for its sheer beauty and, best of all, for its proximity to some of the best Orca and Grizzly viewing on the British Columbia coast, Berry Island, is protected as part of a BC marine conservation area due to its unique natural and cultural history and Farewell Harbour Lodge lies at the epicentre of one of the most biologically active regions on the coast. The lodge, perched on a bluff at the ocean’s edge, has a comfortable lounge and dining room offering spectacular views over picturesque Farewell Harbour. The expansive decks continue as a boardwalk along the shore, leading to eight, private oceanside suites with ensuite bathrooms, a wood stove and 2 queen size beds. A ramp leads off the main lodge to the floating lodge below (formerly Bones Bay Lodge) featuring four additional suites each with a private bathroom for twelve rooms in total. We recommend a minimum stay of 3 nights/4 days at the lodge itself.

Overall we found the Canadian people extremely polite, friendly and helpful but I must make special mention of the staff at Farewell Harbour Lodge. My wife has slight mobility problems, however the staff at Farewell Lodge went out of their way to make sure she had a good time. On the day we were due to go and see the grizzlies my wife decided to stay at the lodge as the outing involved transferring from small boats and a walk through the forest. She would have been quite happy reading her book while I was off photographing the bears but as it happened the girl who was “front of house” had the afternoon free so they went for a short walk in the wood behind the lodge and then they had lunch on the beach. Tim McGrady, the manager at the lodge, was extremely helpful in making sure we got the appropriate outings and went to great lengths to ensure we had a good time. Can’t speak highly enough about all the staff.
