This holiday is an escape from every day life. An escape into the wilderness of Yukon. Caribou Wild Mountain Tours have a mission to show people and give them the wild places in one of the most natural ways posssible – with horses. Experience and appreciate the raw beauty and wildlife in its most natural form, away from roads and civilization. Your guide has over 40 years of stories to share; trapping, guiding, and horseback riding. Their aim is for you to come away from the holiday realizing you were on a trip of a lifetime, an intimate experience riding the trail, camp life, and sharing the wild places. For you to enjoy and understand the natural world, and to hear you say, “When can I come back?”
The 8 day trip has 6 days of riding and 2 days of exploring/hiking from the camp. If you love true nature, animals and adventure, but don’t mind a little rugged this is the trip for you. Each day has something new to offer whether it’s a new camp or a new animal to see. Please note that the accomodation for the main part of the horse trip is camping in tents. You will really escape from the day to day and discover the natural world under the stars and within the mountains.

I would like to thank whoever put together the itinerary, chose the hotels and wrote the information for us to use en route. Everything was excellent! Each hotel was very good quality, but very different from the others. We saw such a variety of things. Our information led us to places we would never have found without it. The excursions were also perfect (canoeing, whale watching, sea kayaking), each of them very small businesses but with very friendly staff. Everything was very remote, which is what we expected, but we were so glad that we found it and were able to enjoy the essence of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Overall, we couldn't fault anything and we would be very keen to use your services again in the future.

Fly from the UK into Whitehorse in the Yukon (usually via Vancouver – depending on the flight schedule). Head to your downtown hotel. Alternatively you can be met and taken straight to Caribou Wild Mountain Tours base (25 minutes away) where you can get yourself ready for the trip and stay in one of their cabins.

Spend the day exploring the city of Whitehorse. Peruse Main Street’s charming shops, local art, the fascinating MacBride Museum and then take a stroll along the Yukon River waterfront to view the historic SS Klondike sternwheeler. You can also take some time to prep your gear for the riding trip.

You can bring your own favourite snacks for lunches on and off the horse, however there will be chance to head to town today to select snacks.

Lake Camp
This is your first day of the tour. Wake up in your cabin, pack up and load up. You will be riding up into the high country and will then have lunch whilst looking for wildlife (common sightings are sheep, moose and bear). After another 1 1/2 hours riding you will set up camp, enjoy a hot supper and relax in your tent.

Grizzly Camp
Today you will pack up camp and then hit the trail again. Enjoy your lunch on the mountain and wildlife viewing then continue the ride towards Grizzly Mountain.
Unpack, set up camp, have dinner and watch for wildlife on the mountain sides. The 2nd day you will stay in camp viewing wildlife (Grizzly, moose, sheep). You may head out on a short horseback ride or short hike to do some exploring around Grizzly Mountain. Evening is time dinner and for telling stories around the fire; hear about life as a trapper and big game guide.

Pack up camp and ride along Pilot Mountain and view Dall sheep, possible also spotting...

Sheep Camp
Pack up camp and ride along Pilot Mountain and view Dall sheep, possible also spotting Grizzly bears and moose, Enjoy lunch high up on a ridge viewing moose and Dall sheep. You will learn about aging, gender identifying and maturity of animals. Continue on to camp for the night. The next day will be based in camp viewing wildlife and hiking up Pilot Mountain or enjoy a mid day ride without pack horses. Discover old ruins of camps that have been used many years before us. Continue looking for for moose or sheep up close and learn the art of the moose call.

Saddle horses, pack up campe and hit the trail. Ride through the pines and open meadows while viewing Pilot Mountain and Flat Mountain. Take your lunch in a meadow, beside a creek that flows from Pilot Mountain then ride to camp along a Pine ridge. Set up camp. This particular camp is in a excellent location for seeing Grizzly Bear, moose and sheep.

Pack up and ride over a beautiful mountain pass that takes you within view of Grizzly and Flat mountain, Yukon River and Lake Laberge. Look out for more wildife before heading back to base camp for dinner. Enjoy your last night in your cabin, play games or play a game of pool.

After breakfast, say your goodbyes and be transferred back to Whitehorse Airport. Depending on the flight schedule you may wish to have a night or more in Whitehorse before heading home. You can also have a few nights in Vancouver before connecting to your international flight back to the UK. Just ask us for your perfect holiday.
