Honeymoons in Canada

While many celebrations, including weddings, have been put on hold for a while, it is great to plan ahead and if you’re planning a wedding, then it’s time to look at a honeymoon and consider Canada. The natural beauty, wide open spaces, romantic retreats, fabulous cuisine and exciting cities are just some of the reasons to think about exploring this wonderful place and making it your special place. Whatever you’re looking for, whatever your budget, there is a part of Canada that is perfect for you to celebrate.

Many couples want the excitement and sophistication of a city, combined with a fun element and there is no place better for this than Toronto and the Niagara region. Stay in a 5-star city hotel, like the gorgeous Ritz Carlton, and explore the exuberance of the city of Toronto. Go to the top of the CN Tower – braving the EdgeWalk if you dare – take a romantic dinner cruise on the harbour to get the best views of the city from the water, have drinks and dinner in the distillery district or take in a game; Toronto has a great sports scene and it’s a perfect experience to enjoy as a couple.

Pick up a car and head to the Niagara region when you’ve done the city; a Niagara Falls visit is a must-do on any list, and there are many ways to experience the falls themselves, be it by boat, zipline or the ultimate helicopter (it’s your honeymoon, treat yourselves!), it’s an amazing sight. Obviously your stay should be in a fallsview room – the Marriott Fallsview is just 100 yards from the brink of the falls – or you combine your visit with a stay in one of the historic and romantic Vintage Inn properties in nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake.  This charming town offers a world of difference from the bright lights of the bustling Falls area and with its laidback charm and wineries on tap, it is an ideal honeymoon getaway.

The Canadian Rockies are one of the most beautiful places on earth; the combination of the mountain vistas and the clear blue lakes is unmatched anywhere in the world. If you’re planning a winter holiday, think about a ski trip where after a day on the slopes, you can enjoy a romantic dip in a hottub, or take a sleigh ride around the lake, before cosying up in a rustic room by your own fireplace. Visit any time between May and October, and romance is in the air around every corner. The stunning sunsets, the sheer magnificence of the towering mountains and the abundance of beautiful lodges and hotels to stay in will make it a honeymoon to remember.

A trip to Atlantic Canada makes for an idyllic honeymoon; the coastline is stunning and with whale-watching, iceberg-spotting and, of course, amazing seafood, it makes for a romantic trip like no other. The city of St Johns in Newfoundland, just over 5 hours flying time from the UK, has a lovely harbour and pretty buildings and lots of places to eat the famous seafood, many of which have live music in the evenings. Make sure you head out to Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America, on the Avalon Peninsula and at Bay Bulls, enjoy a cruise around the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, a protective sanctuary for puffins and other seabirds. This is the time for a picnic to remember, just along the south shore at Ferryland; Lighthouse Picnics offer a wonderful experience with exquisite food at one of the most beautiful locations in the world – Ferryland Head Lighthouse.

Make your Newfoundland honeymoon even more special with a stay at the unique Fogo Island Inn; Fogo Island is a remote island located off the Northeast Coast of Newfoundland, accessible by ferry and the Inn is located on the north side of the island overlooking the ocean and surrounded by a peaceful, rugged landscape.

A stay at Fogo Island Inn is a personal invitation to become part of a centuries-old culture, to fish for cod as the islander’s ancestors did, to forage for wild berries, to watch boat builders or bakers at work, to sit back and listen to the lilt of local music. You are a guest of the whole island here, and whether you spend your days hiking amid raw and beautiful coastal scenery or sketching it with a local artist, it is an experience you will never forget.

There are so many wonderful experiences to be had in Canada for a holiday to remember; see the Northern Lights or see Polar Bears in Manitoba, take a wildlife cruise or stay in a cosy bear lodge in British Columbia, or watch the midnight sun in the Yukon. It is the time to plan that holiday of a lifetime and one to celebrate the start of a new life together needs to be something special; a Canada honeymoon is just that.
