The Yukon takes its name from Yu-kon, the Loucheux Indian word for the Yukon River, the 'great river' that drains most of the territory. Lying north of British Columbia and east of Alaska, it shares many characteristics with them, being rich in rugged mountain peaks, deep canyons, raging rivers, teeming wildlife and meadowlands strewn with wildflowers. This remote land was changed for ever by the last of the great gold rushes. Between 1897 and 1904 more than a billion dollars worth of gold was taken from the creeks of the Yukon, names like Bonanza and Eldorado came into our language and the thirst to discover more of this awe-inspiring territory was born. It became more accessible by the building of the Alaska Highway in 1942 but still retains its aura of adventure.
To holiday in the Yukon is to take the road less travelled. Your Yukon holiday could take you by car, motorhome or escorted tour to explore the Dempster Highway all the way north from Dawson City to the Arctic Circle, drive the romantically and aptly named 'Top of the World' Highway or the Alaska Highway whch starts in British Columbia and goes all the way to Alaska.
However, and perhaps unexpectedly, among all this wilderness, the Yukon has some first class lodges with superb facilities and food as well as a host of welcoming hotels and campsites. The Yukon is one of the best places for a motorhome holiday as well as a number of wonderful canoeing and fishing trips. The Yukon is also amazing for a winter holiday when the Northern Lights are at their best and you can experience real winter with dog sleds, snow shoeing and snowmobiles. |
