Klondike Explorer Visit the Yukon on a Self Drive Holiday

13 nights

Visit the Yukon - home of the Klondike Gold Rush, Canada's tallest mountains and the world's largest non-polar ice field. This self-drive holiday visits the Yukon's top attractions and some of the most stunning scenic locations in Yukon, Alaska and British Columbia.

Highlights include the Top of the World Highway, panning for gold, wildlife, wide open spaces and empty roads. Whilst in the Yukon will also visit Dawson City, home of the Klondike Gold Rush and Kluane National Park, with an optional excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. A ferry will take you into Alaska and Skagway where we would recommend a trip on the infamous White Pass and Yukon Railway.

Day 2-3

Whitehorse to Mayo, Silver Trail

Today you will drive north from Whitehorse along the Klondike Highway, following the Yukon River Valley.  There will no doubt be many sightings of wildlife along the way of animals that may include moose, black bears, mule deer and elk.  Highlights of the day include Five Finger Rapids on the Yukon River and a great introduction to First Nations history and culture in Carmacks.  This is a chance for you to explore a rarely visited region of the Yukon, the historic mining district located area Keno and Silver City. Long ago silver was mined in the area – in fact at one time Keno was the site of the largest producing silver mine in the world!

Day 4-5

Mayo to Dawson City

Leave the silver mines and journey to the gold.  Dawson City is an historic, rustic Gold Rush town whose unpaved streets and wooden boardwalks are still roamed by miners and their descendants. You can tour Bonanza Creek road and the Goldfields, pan for gold and see how more than 50,000 miners, merchants, dance hall girls and gamblers, searching for wealth and fame, left their mark in the valley’s of the Klondike, Indian and Yukon Rivers.  At night, stop in at Diamond Tooth Gerties and play a round or 2 of the Vegas-style games, or sidle up to the bar and enjoy the Can Can floorshow.  To cap off your evenings, take a drive to the top of the Midnight Dome, and marvel at the views over the Yukon and Klondike river valleys.

2 nights in Dawson City.

Day 7-8

Tok to Kluane National Park

Together with Wrangell St. Elias National Park, Canada’s Kluane National Park forms half of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  These 2 parks are home to the largest non-polar ice field in the world and the continent’s tallest mountains. The road winds, the traffic is sparse and the wilderness vast.  Take advantage of activities on offer such as guided hikes, fishing, canoeing and a glacier flight over the St Elias icefields. You can also take an optional excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

2 nights in or near Kluane National Park.

Day 9-10

Kluane National Park to Haines

Your route takes you past the Tatshenshini River, You will travel over the Haines Pass and pass by the Three Guardsman mountains as you drop down to the coastal side of the mountains.  The roadway travels through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, home to more than 3000 nesting pairs of eagles.  Haines is a wonderfully typical Alaskan town.  Home to fisherman and loggers, the town retains a charming character typical of many small Alaskan villages.  The area was home to the Chilkat Indians for thousands of years and their influence can be felt throughout the community.  An excursion to Glacier Bay National Park is highly recommended; 14 tidewater glaciers cascade into the heart of the national park providing spectacular, iconic scenes.

2 nights in Haines.

Day 11

Haines to Skagway

You will travel the short distance to Skagway by ferry.  Though only 15 miles, sightings of whales and seals are possible in the open water at the top of the Lynn Canal, one of the deepest fjords in the USA.  Skagway was the “Gateway to the Klondike Goldrush”. The 3 hour White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad tour is a must.
