Alaska by Ferry Voyage of discovery
Alaska by Ferry is necessarily a voyage of discovery. Ferries are not cruise ships! They run to their own schedule and it does not always fit in with yours. But if you are prepared to be flexible, this can be an amazing way to discover Alaska far away from the 5* luxury but very close to the Alaskan people and their heritage - also, of course, very environmentally friendly!
Your voyage will probably start in Prince Rupert in Northern BC. Easy to get to by air from Vancouver, by train from Jasper or by ferry from Port Hardy at the northern end of Vancouver Island, Prince Rupert is an interesting town with opportunities for great bear viewing and lots of First Nation culture. It might well end in Whitehorse, Yukon and a flight back to Vancouver - the freedom to choose is yours!
Here's a day-by-day guide to your itinerary. Feel free to ask us to add other days or ideas and excursions by adding them to your wishlist, so we can give you the best price.View full itinerary
Prince Rupert to Ketchikan
Five hour ferry from Prince Rupert to Ketchikan, Alaska’s southernmost Port. Here you can explore the Tongass Historical museum of visit the world’s largest collection of totem poles. You can also take a boat of plane excursion into the Misty Fjords whose rainforests shelter many species of land animals and sea life.
2 nights at the Best Western the Landing Hotel.
The next major port of call would be an 18 hour ferry to Juneau – sometimes overnight. You could also consider stopping in at historic Wrangell, visit Petroglyph Beach and learn about the history by visiting Chief Shakes Island & Tribal House. Petersburg has the southern most tidewater glacier in North America and their Norwegian history is very evident in the house paintings. Juneau is Alaska’s capital – strange really as there is no road communication to the outside world – but makes a splendid stop for 3 nights. Take the opportunity to take a boat tour to spectacular Tracy Arm Fjord to see birds, seals and whales or Admiralty Island to see the brown bears. You must also explore the Glacier Bay National Park – there is an awesome flightseeing trip over the glaciers. In town you will find attractive Victorian homes and the St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church built in 1897.
Accommodation is at the Goldbelt Hotel for 3 nights.Close
Juneau to Skagway - a 6 hours ferry ride. Skagway was the main landing point for the early gold prospectors – 20,000 of them passed through in 1898. The Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park is worth a visit.
