Polar Bear Watching in Canada

Canada provides perhaps the best chance you will ever have to see and get close to the magnificent Polar Bear.

Frontier Canada has a huge range of polar bear watching holidays with choices ranging from a long weekend in Churchill to an 8-night cruise.

You will see polar bears in Churchill from mid-October to mid-November and from the expedition cruising ship in July-August. In Churchill you will see the bears from the specially constructed Tundra Buggies and the cost of your holiday will be governed by the amount of people in each buggy. This can vary from 18 to 40. There are also holidays where you can sleep out on the tundra in a converted buggy. This is an amazing experience.

Please click on one of polar bear watching holidays below to see the choice that you have. We are aware that the choice is quite bewildering so do please telephone us on 020 8776 8709 to discuss your polar bear watching holiday.

How and when should I see the polar bears?

The answer largely depends on how much time you want to spend with the bears and the amount of money you have to spend. You can have a quick 2 night trip with one full day polar bear viewing or spend many more nights to really get a feel for these majestic creatures and learn more about Churchill, the way of life in the north, with the option to take a helicopter flight over the tundra or go dogsledding. We have summarised the choices below but there are many more variations - so the best thing really is to contact us to discuss your wishes and we will find the trip to suit!

Polar bears can actually be seen in Churchill any time from July to November. The biggest concentration occurs from mid-October to mid-November when the bears congregate in Churchill waiting for the ice to form so that they can leave the land for their hunting grounds.

If you are passionate about the bears and the land in which they live, or if you are a keen photographer, we would suggest one of the longer holidays staying in Churchill town, in the Tundra Buggy Lodge positioned near Gordon Point in the Churchill Wildlife Management area or at one of the lodges just outside Churchill.

The Tundra Buggy

The Tundra Buggies take a maximum of 40 people; less people on the buggy means better polar bear viewing and more expense.

All of the Tundra Buggies are furnished with dual-pane frost-free windows and contain propane heating systems that closely resemble a cozy fireplace, with real flame (behind glass).

The Tours

There are three levels of polar bear adventures. All have a choice of staying in Churchill Town or in the Tundra Buggy Lodge.

Specialist:

These trips only have 18-20 people per trip and are accompanied by a specialist guide such as a photographer or wildlife expert. You will have most time on the ice and will be given a year's subscription to Polar Bears International.

Enthusiast

These are the most popular since they have a maximum of 22 people in the buggy which allows everyone to have a window seat. They are accompanied by a very well-informed interpretive guide and include extras such as dog sledding, a visit to the Eskimo Museum, a helicopter tour over the tundra and cultural programmes as well as a one-year membership to Polar Bears International.

Adventurer

These are the least expensive. There will be up to 40 people in the buggy and will be self-guided.

Lodge Based Experiences

There are also a number of lodges around Churchill where polar bears can be seen in July, August and September as well as in October and November.  These are remarkable places where you do not use the tundra buggies at all but see them on foot which gives you an entirely different perspective. They are only accessible by air, so your trip includes an amazing flight over the tundra from Churchill. Far away from any electric light, you have a good chance of seeing the Aurora later in the year – an added bonus!
