Winnipeg is the vibrant, creative capital of Manitoba, right at the geographical centre of Canada and North America; the city offers a variety of arts, culture, sports, recreation and entertainment to satisfy every taste.
From the architecturally distinctive Exchange District to the joie de vivre of Old St. Boniface, Winnipeg’s French Quarter, Winnipeg is a striking blend of old and new, traditional and avant-garde. The junction of the Red and the Assiniboine Rivers, now known as The Forks, was a trading spot for Aboriginal tribes. Cree, Ojibwa and the Assiniboine Nations traded furs, shell beads and other goods on this spot. Today it is a thriving market with a multitude of shops. Downstairs, The Market features an irresistible fresh food emporium while upstairs, in the Market Loft, shoppers will find crafts and artworks from 300 local and Canadian artisans.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights opened in September 2014 in a spectacular building whose 10 galleries contain diverse stories from Canada and around the world displayed through interactive presentation, multimedia technology and world-class design. The newly renovated Assiniboine Zoo spread over 80 acres has some splendid exhibits including a "Journey to Churchill".
